| Frequently Asked Questions
| |
| 1. In your brochure you have mentioned that it is ICF certified. How does this work? |
ICF requires that coaches take coach training for three reasons:
To become an ICF certified coach |
To maintain one’s ICF certification |
And, as of April 1, 2012 to join the organization as a ‘coach member’. |
This course provides ICF certified credits that can be used towards those three reasons |
See http://www.coachfederation.org/getcredentialed/ for ICF definitions and instructions on how to become a credentialed coach. |
| |
| 2. Can I start coaching after completing this course? |
Many individuals coach without ICF certification. What you must consider is (1) whether you are prepared to coach and (2) what qualifications your potential clients may require. |
This course alone will not make you an ICF certified coach. This course provides you with ICF credits that can be applied towards an application to become certified. |
| |
| 3. Earn continuing Education Units (CCEUs) awarded by International Coach Federation (ICF). How will that help me to get certified? |
ICF requires coach specific training to become a certified coach.
See http://www.coachfederation.org/includes/media/docs/CredentialingRequirementsChart2011(1).pdf
for the specific requirements needed for ICF credentials. |
| |
| 4. Is it possible to have some Audio /video files in the course? |
Audio/video files are presently not part of the course. There is a 90-minute conference call with all participants at the beginning and end of the course. Readings, postings and on-line discussions will form the foundation of the course. |
| |
| 5. Can you come on a Video Conference to address us if possible? |
The faculty will be working with FRED and Fielding Graduate University to see what opportunities could be created during the course to offer a video conference. |
| |
| 6. In ICF parlance, does this course belong to Portfolio or ACTP? |
As it is being offered, this course can be made part of a Portfolio application to ICF from credentialing. The Fielding Graduate University offers an ACTP (Certified Coach-accredited Training Program). This course is separate from Fielding's ACTP program.
See
http://www.coachfederation.org/includes/media/docs/CredentialingRequirementsChart2011(1).pdf
for the requirements to each application method. |
| |
| 7. What should I do after completing this course to become a certified coach? |
If you wish to become a certified coach through International Coach Federation, please see the responses to numbers 1-3 above. |
You may also seek other avenues to complete a coaching certification. When you have completed the course, how you choose to become certified moving forward is your own decision. |
This course provides you with 30 CCE units from International Coach Federation for continuing coach education. It does not provide you with a completed coach certification (see numbers 1-3 above).
| |
| 8. Is there any examination/evaluation at the end of the course? |
The course work consists of online work, two telephone training sessions and four peer coaching sessions (you will be paired with another student). To successfully pass the course, each student must complete these items. |
A handbook will be provided to each student with all the necessary information on completing the course. |
There will be no examination or evaluation at the end of the course.

| 10. How much time is required for each of the two telephone training sessions in the course? |
There will be two telephone training sessions during the course. The first one will be at the beginning of the course to introduce the Appreciative Coaching model and distinguish between problem solving and generative approaches to change. This will be combined with discussion and agreements on how to work together online. |
The second telephone training session will be at the end of the course and will focus on what participants have learned from studying and personally experiencing Appreciative Coaching. |
Each call will be 90 minutes long. Students are required to be on the calls in order to complete the course. |
| |
| 11. Are there specific times when students will be required to log into the e-learning portal? |
There are 8 week-long online assignments. Each assignment includes required (and some optional) readings. |
You are expected to respond within three days of the beginning of the assignment. These postings do not require formal essay-type responses, but rather brief comments (a paragraph or two) that are succinct, informal, and conversational in tone. |
You are expected to post at least twice during the week—once at the beginning of the week, and again as the dialogue progresses. As the assignment progresses, you may find yourself posting more than twice. There is nothing like rich online dialogue to facilitate learning! |
For the pre-session introductions, you are expected to respond to everyone in the team. |
For the remaining assignments, you are expected to respond either to an individual team member, or to the team as a whole. |
